Math Teacher Uses DonorsChoose.org to Look for Funding PDF Print E-mail

UPDATE: Keep the Donations Coming!
The A-C Central Middle School math class has received several donations on DonorsChoose.org for a new set of classroom calculators; however, more money is needed. If you or your business would like to contribute, please go to: http://www.donorschoose.org/cdonnan. More information is on the website. If you do not have Internet access and would like to contribute, please call Carrie Jo Donnan at 217-476-6010.

Carrie Jo Donnan, math teacher at A-C Central Middle School, is utilizing a website called DonorsChoose.org to search for funding for calculators for her middle school math classroom. All 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are going to be asked to have their own TI-30XA calculator next year (approximately $10 at Wal-Mart), but the classroom still needs extras that the students can borrow when they forget their own or are unable to purchase on their own. This program allows public school teachers to post a need in their classroom and any individual or business that is willing to help may donate money to the cause. Any donation is accepted, even if it does not cover the full price of the request. The site is free for public school teachers and is an excellent venue for people to donate money to help out the educational needs that our schools are facing in this economy. Here is a link to the project: http://goo.gl/gYPiU. Any funding that could be made by individuals or businesses that are able would be greatly appreciated by the teacher and students.

Find-A-Book/2011 iREAD Summer Reading Program PDF Print E-mail

Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is proud to join Governor Pat Quinn and Christopher Koch, superintendent of the Illinois State Board of Education, in encouraging parents to check out a valuable Web site aimed at keeping children reading during the upcoming summer months when school is not in session.

The Find-a-Book Web site, www.lexile.com/findabook, has quick and easy access to a list of books that will match a child’s reading level and interests, as well as the nearest libraries carrying each title.

The Find-a-Book site uses a student’s reading score in Lexiles, a measure of reading ability and text difficulty derived from state standardized tests, including the ISAT. The Web site features a search option to access appropriate book choices based on grade level and comfort with typical reading materials at that grade level.

Research has shown the powerful impact of continued reading over the summer. One study found that children can lose up to 60 percent of their skills during a two-month vacation. Children who read during the summer months, however, can sustain their reading gains and are better prepared for learning when the school bell rings again in the fall.

Secretary White also encourages parents to talk with children about the fun and importance of summer reading and take them to the local public library. Librarians have useful information about Lexiles and other programs such as the iREAD program, a summer reading program offered through the Illinois Library Association (ILA).

The 2011 iREAD Summer Reading Program theme is A Midsummer Knight's Read. Local library iREAD programming will include activities, games, art, reading lists and much more for children, teens and adults. Check it out at your local public library or go to the ILA iREAD Web site at http://www.ila.org/iread/iread-summer-reading-program.

Schools have until July 15, 2011 to apply.
Grants will be awarded in September 2011.

Grants will be awarded based on merit determined by the Monsanto Fund, need and community support. The more farmers to nominate a school district, the more it demonstrates community support and strengthens the school district’s application.
